Celebrating Earth Month at Planet Shoes

April 13, 2011 Comments (2)

Suited for all climates, tastes, and occupations, Planet Shoes’ offerings continue to impress us. Now the earth-friendly company has kicked off a special promotion during the month of April to help reforestation efforts–and you can get in on the action and help save the trees!

What It’s About
In an extended celebration of Earth Day, Planet Shoes established a special partnership with Carbonfund.org and the Million Tree Challenge. Simply add a tree to your purchase for $1, and Planetshoes.com will match your donation. Planet Shoes, which already champions earth-friendly brands, is dedicated to their cause, reminding shoppers that deforestation is responsible for 20% of global warming.

What to Buy
If you’re thinking about buying shoes this spring, consider picking up a pair from Planet Shoes to plant a tree for just $1. Can’t decide which pair to buy? Here are some of the company’s top picks:

Eco-Friendly Lines: Did you know it takes 1,000 years for a shoe to decompose? By buying a pair made from sustainable materials or a pair that uses recycled packaging, you’re helping the planet. Eco brands include Acorn, Merrell, Teva, Terrasoles, and Naya.

Lovely Brands: Brands with a conscience support essential activism, local communities, and grassroots groups. Chaco’s Local Ecotreads are perfect summer sandals from a responsible company, and would make a great addition to your shopping list.

Vegan Shoes: Skip the funky hemp (unless that’s your taste) and get sophisticated vegan sandals from Jambu and Earth Flora.

Planetshoes.com is planting trees all month, so why not join their list of generous donors today?

Those ‘70s Shoes

April 9, 2011 Comments (0)

If you’ve kept an eye on fashion blogs and magazines lately, you know it’s all about the ‘70s for spring and summer 2011. Colorful eye makeup, wide-leg pants, and even frizzy hair are making a major comeback. This means that these fabulous looks are going to be everywhere, from the beaches, to the streets, to the office, as the weather heats up. Think platforms, super-cool style, and glamour that works for both day and night.

Platform Perfection
Get a serious ‘70s vibe with the Calysta pump from Steve Madden. These are a classic ‘70s-inspired platform worthy of Annie Hall. The shoes are closed-toe, so you may be able to get away with them in a more relaxed office environment. Don’t be discouraged by the sizeable 4-inch heel. Thanks to the platform, you’ll easily be able to stay standing. The platforms have a stud detail along the sides and an ankle strap that makes them perfect for pairing with a midi skirt (mid-calf length) or a maxi hemline (ankle length). Both of these lengths are all the rage for spring and summer, and a show-stopping pair of platforms will let you play with proportion without looking frumpy. Read more »

Red Hot Shoes for Spring

April 2, 2011 Comments (0)

Bold colors can make many statements, but nothing says, “I’ve arrived” quite like a fabulous shade of red. Red shoes work for the office or for the weekend, as long as you know how to wear them. Red is a strong color for spring and works with the neutral shades that dominate most wardrobes. You can wear the color with camel, shades of gray, navy, and even denim. Check out our red shoe picks that will spruce up your look for spring:

Casual Chic
Woven leather is a must for that luxe summer outfit. The Audry platform sandal from Rockport works for looking chic, yet casual. They have an open toe, so you might not be able to wear them to the office (except for casual Fridays). Try the Audry platform sandals out as the focal point of your look. A simple wrap dress or a button-up shirt and capris create a chic look that can go from casual Friday to cocktail hour. Audry sandals are also great for traveling. You can wear them in the day with capris and switch to a dramatic maxi dress for evening. Read more »

Shoe Trend Alert: Back on the Block!

April 1, 2011 Comments (0)

The block heel is taking over for spring! It’s a bit of an edgier take on the kitten heel and is usually fairly low–measuring in at 2-3 inches. These heels will provide a bit more leverage and a more dressed-up look than your basic spring/summer flip-flops and ballet flats. There’s nothing better than being comfortable when it’s scorching hot outside, so a pair of block heels are a smart investment.

At the Office
The block heel is one of the most office-friendly trends we’ve seen in a long time. A wrap dress is instantly updated with block heels. Wide-leg pants and skinny trousers also work with the silhouette. Try a button-up shirt or fluid blouse with a silk scarf tied loosely at your neck for a modern ‘70s take when worn with the shoes. Skip black or chocolate block heels. It’s sunny outside, so work with neutral or bright shades that are versatile. Camel, bronze, red, or green are great options that work with neutral pieces in any office wardrobe.

On the Weekend
Block heels instantly add a chic element to your outfit, so feel free to wear them with classic summer pieces you probably already have in your closet. Dress up basics, like a tank top and jeans, with a lightweight tailored jacket, or opt for dressy shorts (another major trend for 2011). A print dress also works for brunch or a date. If you plan on buying more than one pair of block heels, look for pairs that can add some color or texture to your look. Textured fabrics, such as raffia and cork, embrace the warm weather and also work with a myriad of fabrics in your wardrobe. If you’re going for a pair of bold-colored block heels, look for a mix of a neutral color with bright or two-toned colors, such as green and navy. The mixture of bold and neutral will increase the block heel’s wardrobe versatility.

Cork Heels – Comfort and Style for Spring

March 28, 2011 Comments (0)

Cork heels are fabulous because they look stylish, but they’re also incredibly functional. They create a soft tread for your feet and feel comfortable for hours. Whether you’re traveling or just trotting around town, cork heels are brilliant for adding a little texture to your look and keeping your tootsies grounded.

Retro ‘70s Style
The Hannah sandal from 7 For All Mankind combines the block-heel trend along with the cork heel. The nude leather straps reach across the top of the foot and have a buckle closure at the side. Hannah sandals can add a ‘70s touch to any outfit and look great with shorts. The heel is high enough to add some drama, but the nude color and block heel prevents the look from being a bit overbearing. Wear the Hannah sandals with sun dresses, shorts, capri pants or skinny jeans this spring.

Feminine Details
For a dainty take on cork heels, try the Carmelized sandals from Rocket Dog. These tan sandals have an ankle strap and cage detail across the top of the foot with a peep toe. The stacked heel is easy on the feet and measures in at 3 inches. These girly sandals can go from day to night by adding a few gold accessories. In the day, wear the Carmelized sandals with a print blouse on top and capri pants. For evening, switch out to a sun dress or maxi dress and pile on the gold bangles or a pair of large golden hoop earrings.

Glamed-Out!
Go for major glamour in a cork heel with Hide Away platform sandals from Chinese Laundry. They’re statement-making shoes fit for a breezy summer night and your favorite little white dress. These sandals aren’t for every day, but they work for those nights when you need a fairly comfortable shoe that looks hot! If you want to dress them down a bit, try an asymmetrical blouse with tapered slacks or a simple top and skinny jeans.
