Shoe Lessons from the 1920s

March 23, 2011 Comments (0)

We might complain about shoes that look great but fall apart after they’ve been worn two or three times, or the trials of finding divine shoes only to discover they come with astronomical shipping costs, but we should be glad we have it so easy. A weekend marathon of films featuring 1920s silent film star Clara Bow, who also appeared in a few talkies, such as The Wild Party, Dangerous Curves, and The Saturday Night Kid, revealed what shoes were really like more than 90 years ago—and it wasn’t all Hollywood glamour.

Exotic Shoes for Every Day

March 11, 2011 Comments (0)

Exotic shoes can include fish skin, animal print, and vintage-style pumps, so you might already wear these exotic styles more than you think. But can you wear your exotic shoes to the office regularly? These daring shoes for daily wear can have you doing just that.

Unusual Giraffe Print: If you ever see a pair of shoes in brown-and-white giraffe print, snap them up! This animal print is less common and therefore can be used in more situations, and if you find a shoe that has a strappy upper, the giraffe print is minimized to look just like a regular pattern.

What to Wear with Those Tricky Spring Menswear Flats

February 15, 2011 Comments (0)

Any heel addict will tell you that flat, menswear-inspired shoes are next to impossible to rock, and we’re not going to argue that when you’re used to shoes that put you up, going down is a sudden, scary change. Then, after you get used to them, there’s the challenge of making them look good. These styling tips for your spring menswear leave your feet feeling jazzy and looking great!

Sparkly Menswear Flats
A lot of sparkles mean that you can take it easy with the rest of your outfit. Don’t sweat little details, because your shoes are doing the talking. We’ve seen sparkly menswear flats worn with adorable a-line dress (complete with cute pockets) as well as carrot pants, and the effect is sweet, ladylike, and daytime-appropriate. Don’t save the metallics just for night!

Look to avoid: Sparkles worn with more sparkles can be daunting.

Two-Tone Flats
Two-tone menswear-type flats often have an upper design similar to spectator or saddle shoes, which feature a darker and lighter color-on-color effect. Two-tone flats look nice next to neutrals like creams and greys, but they also look stunning with floral patterns in primary colors.

Look to avoid: Two-tone flats worn with heavily patterned tights can be dizzying. Read more »

How to Wear Metallic Shoes

August 4, 2010 Comments (0)

Metallic shoes are still going strong, but some women have issues with how to fit them into a wardrobe. The great thing about metallic shoes is they serve as a neutral. Ditch your staples like black and brown for pewter or bronze, colors that go with nearly everything but also add some sparkle to an outfit.

Metallic shoes are darling and work for the office and the weekend. Consider the colors you usually wear when shopping for metallic shoes. If you stick to black and cool tones like blue, purple and green, you are going to benefit most from silver-tones shoes. For those who love earthy and warm tones, reach for gold. Dusted suede or metallic shoes in pewter or bronze are more versatile since they tend to pick up the hue they’re worn with, giving you more options. Read more »

Shoe-Booties Continue to Reign

July 22, 2010 Comments (0)

Shoe-booties have been around for a few seasons and the trend is still going strong for fall and winter 2010. Shoe-booties are a great investment because they can work for the office or weekends and can be worn with everything from dresses to jeans or leggings. If you already have shoe-booties in black or brown, take a look at other textures, colors and details that can elevate your style.

A wedge heel on a pair of shoe-booties is comfortable for casual outings. The Shiloh ankle booties from Daniblack have a foldover cuff, making them perfect for leggings, tights or skinny jeans. Contrast stitching adds dimension to the shoes and the crepe wedge platform and heel adds an organic look. The light brown color contrasts the black suede, allowing you to wear them with black or brown. Stray from the cheesy fashion rule that black and brown can’t be worn together. It’s done all over Europe and creates a rich look that’s perfect for cold weather. Read more »
