Lace-Up Sandals for Spring and Summer

March 30, 2011 Comments (0)

You probably have a load of flat T-strap sandals and gladiators in your shoe closet, so go for an edgier look this season with lace-up sandals. What’s our favorite thing about lace-ups? They’re comfortable, easily transition from day to night, and they add a trendy spin to your summertime wardrobe.

Mad for Madden
If you need a black pair of sandals that say “summer,” go for the Steve Madden Gilliee sandal. The sandals are ideal for day or evening and have a subtle wedge that can work for serious walking tours in an unknown city or dancing the night away. When wearing the Gilliee sandal in the day, go for casual tops and shorts or a tank dress. For evenings out, go with a body conscious frock or a racer back tank in a feminine fabric (think silk or lace overlay) with a skirt that has movement. Gilliee sandals are also available in a warm cognac tone, making them the go-to lace-up sandals for those with medium or deep skin tones.

Tan-Tastic!
The Cabaret sandals from Joie are available in tan and black, but it’s the tan version that has our hearts. That fabulous shade works with just about anything! Wining looks for spring and summer include prints like paisley as well as geometric shapes and ikat. The tan Cabaret sandals look trendy without competing with such bold styles. Cabarets also allow you to experiment with your pedicure color. When wearing a neutral shoe color, like tan, go with statement-making polish colors like bright blue or lavender.

Gray is the Word
Gray is a smart shade for spring and summer. It’s neutral, but looks a bit more fashion forward than other versatile colors. The Baroque sandal from Mia is available in this fabulous gray shade and has subtle slits that offer a peek of skin throughout the upper. The sandals have a small wedge heel, making them a great pair of shoes to wear with dressy shorts or a sun dress. Because the shoes are a dusty gray color, you’ll want to play them up with bright shades. Try pink, neon hues, and jewel tones to add that summer vibe to these neutral sandals.

Must-Have Espadrilles for Spring and Summer

February 10, 2011 Comments (0)

Nothing says summer like a pair of espadrilles. There are lots of ways to wear these classic sandals, which are cutest when they come in the form of a major wedge heel. This elongates your legs and they’re also comfortable because they evenly distribute your weight. There’s no toppling over because you have plenty of support so be sure to add a pair to your summer shoe wardrobe this year.

We recently talked about denim accessories on MyShoes.com. The Resort wedges from Penny Loves Kenny are winners for traveling or going for a flirty look when running errands. These espadrilles have a major wedge heel and platform. Red patent-look straps wrap the ankle and dark denim creates a flat bow over the toe. Wear these espadrille wedges with a loose shirt and slim white jeans or a sun dress for a lunch date. The Resort wedges will also look great at the pool if you’re the type to show off your (faux) ultra long legs while wearing a swimsuit. Read more »

Lady on a Train: Traveling Shoes for Those Who Don’t Fly

December 29, 2010 Comments (0)

When it gets close to the holidays, it’s so fun to watch b&w movies like Lady on a Train with Deanna Durbin. And that kind of a movie can really get us thinking, too: if you’re avoiding the TSA drama and will be traveling by train or bus this winter, what shoes should you pack? Here’s our list of top footwear picks, as recommended by readers.

Walking Shoes or MBTs

Shoes designed for walking are great when you have a lot of transfers planned for one trip. I’ll never forget a transfer I had in Miami—I was wearing the cutest leather flats with a big bow on the toe, but they destroyed my feet. I never thought about on-foot transfers until that day, but I never forgot, either.

Styling Tip: Wear your walking shoes with yoga pants and a tunic to make them look more natural.

Low-Heeled Knee-High Boots

These boots look chic, but they also are comfortable enough to wear all day long. One of the best things about knee-high boots for traveling is that you can wear them with long compression socks that go up to your knee. Your heel shouldn’t measure over 2” for ultimate comfort, and it should be slightly blocky.

Styling Tip: Try your low-heeled boots with a skirt to dress them up. Packing separates is always smart for the season.

Bright Flats from Cole Haan or Aerosoles

When you don’t want to give away the fact that you dress for comfort, try a brightly-colored flat shoe from a brand you can trust, like Cole Haan or Aerosoles. These smart shoes won’t let you down in the wardrobe department, and they also won’t let you down when it comes to comfort.

Styling Tip: Grab a colorful tote or satchel to being out the brightness in your flats.

Ecco and Clarks with Smart Socks

Ecco and Clarks shoes are two highly recommended shoes to select for spending time on your feet and looking good—and those two picks are the result of a lot of research. If you want to get a shoe that looks less “strictly business,” then it’s recommended you look for a black-on-black shoe. Wear socks that stimulate circulation.

Styling Tip: Get your smart socks in black so they show less wear.

Soft Ankle Boots with a Roomy Fit

If you want to be able to segue from leggings to roomy denim, make sure your boots can accommodate the tucking in of any pants leg. Soft boots with folds around the ankle can accommodate cuffed pants and tucked-in thick denim much better than skinny black leather boots, and that means you’ll look chic and feel good on your trip.

Styling Tip: Wear your soft ankle boots with black jeans to avoid traveling grim.

And we’re always accepting suggestions, too!

Rubber Sandals

These shoes don’t take up much room at all, and they are perfect for showering or chilling out in the sauna (or in your room!). Rubber sandals can be purchased with a special slim line that makes them particularly easy to pack in your carry-on. Look for ones by Havaianas, which are often very fashion-forward.

Traveling Shoes, South American Edition

September 30, 2010 Comments (0)

Are you traveling to South America soon? We’ve got a little primer list of what you can consider bringing along with you. Note: we’ve actually been to South America, if you were wondering!

Rubber Flip-Flips, Two Pairs
Why rubber flip flops? You need one pair for the shower, and another pair for changing into for quick trips outside. Even if you are not a fan of rubber sandals, even one pair will do you well in South America, especially now—it’s spring down there! The breezes are blowing, and the weather is balmy. Rain could come at any time, and who wants to spoil her shoes?

Heeled Wedges
Wedges are a popular silhouette in South America, and if you want to blend in with the locals, this is how you do it! Your heeled wedges don’t have to be high and they don’t have to be expensive, but it would help if you get a pair that matches with nearly everything. Black or brown strappy wedges with plain soles are ideal. Read more »
