Spring Showers: Protecting Your Fave Shoes From Wet Weather

March 16, 2011 Comments (0)

When you’re knee-deep (literally) in snow, it’s hard to imagine that Spring is right around the corner, but with the mercury starting to slowly rise – and for our own sanity – I’m grasping hold of the meteorologists claims that we’re headed for warmer weather and totally embracing the concept of summer shoes.

However, what we always tend to forget is that with Spring comes a whole heck of a lot of rainfall and, while I’m certainly pumped to break out my non-boot related shoe wardrobe, I’d hate to see some of my favorite styles get damaged in a downpour.

Enter the Shuella, a pocket-sized package that, as the creators suggest, serve as a type of umbrella for your shoes. Think of these as a sort of portable rain boot that can be stowed in your purse or desk drawer and busted out when the need arises.

So what do they look like? Essentially Shuella’s – which are worn over your original shoes, whether heeled or flat – are a pair of ultra supple rain boots – available in your choice of hot pink or basic black – that have a wide collar that allows them to be folded over an secured asymmetrically with a trio of Velcro straps. While we don’t think they’re really going to win any style awards, they aren’t all that bad to look at and are certainly practical with a slip free sole. Plus, the makers want you to use these emergency shoes over and over, and enclose a cloth to wipe them down before stowing them in their very own carrying case.

These shoe protectors – which retail for about $50 per pair – have been endorsed by Oprah (which is like the highest seal of approval) as well as the ladies over at Good Morning America, but what do you think? Would you Shuella?

Lady on a Train: Traveling Shoes for Those Who Don’t Fly

December 29, 2010 Comments (0)

When it gets close to the holidays, it’s so fun to watch b&w movies like Lady on a Train with Deanna Durbin. And that kind of a movie can really get us thinking, too: if you’re avoiding the TSA drama and will be traveling by train or bus this winter, what shoes should you pack? Here’s our list of top footwear picks, as recommended by readers.

Walking Shoes or MBTs

Shoes designed for walking are great when you have a lot of transfers planned for one trip. I’ll never forget a transfer I had in Miami—I was wearing the cutest leather flats with a big bow on the toe, but they destroyed my feet. I never thought about on-foot transfers until that day, but I never forgot, either.

Styling Tip: Wear your walking shoes with yoga pants and a tunic to make them look more natural.

Low-Heeled Knee-High Boots

These boots look chic, but they also are comfortable enough to wear all day long. One of the best things about knee-high boots for traveling is that you can wear them with long compression socks that go up to your knee. Your heel shouldn’t measure over 2” for ultimate comfort, and it should be slightly blocky.

Styling Tip: Try your low-heeled boots with a skirt to dress them up. Packing separates is always smart for the season.

Bright Flats from Cole Haan or Aerosoles

When you don’t want to give away the fact that you dress for comfort, try a brightly-colored flat shoe from a brand you can trust, like Cole Haan or Aerosoles. These smart shoes won’t let you down in the wardrobe department, and they also won’t let you down when it comes to comfort.

Styling Tip: Grab a colorful tote or satchel to being out the brightness in your flats.

Ecco and Clarks with Smart Socks

Ecco and Clarks shoes are two highly recommended shoes to select for spending time on your feet and looking good—and those two picks are the result of a lot of research. If you want to get a shoe that looks less “strictly business,” then it’s recommended you look for a black-on-black shoe. Wear socks that stimulate circulation.

Styling Tip: Get your smart socks in black so they show less wear.

Soft Ankle Boots with a Roomy Fit

If you want to be able to segue from leggings to roomy denim, make sure your boots can accommodate the tucking in of any pants leg. Soft boots with folds around the ankle can accommodate cuffed pants and tucked-in thick denim much better than skinny black leather boots, and that means you’ll look chic and feel good on your trip.

Styling Tip: Wear your soft ankle boots with black jeans to avoid traveling grim.

And we’re always accepting suggestions, too!

When the weather starts to change and the daylight hours slowly become more plentiful, you need to lighten up your look accordingly. You can still wear your dark gray coat and eggplant tights, but just lightening up your shoes will make your outfit welcoming of spring. You still need boots since in most areas, spring can be quite the soggy season and these light boots will do the trick.

Transitional Footwear for the College Student

October 12, 2010 Comments (0)

Did you just finish college, or are you currently doing an internship? These shoes are all intelligent purchases if you’re trying to make a transition from classes to professional obligations. Consider them “starter shoes”!

Low Heels- Kitten Style
Low kitten heels are a smart transitional choice for a student—you can walk anywhere in these heels, and you’ll still feel like you’re dressier than usual. Because kitten heels are low and easy to wear for longer distances, they might seem as though they get damaged quickly. Even if you have to replace the heel tip frequently, these shoes are still a fantastic buy. Read more »
