Caring for Patent Leather Shoes

April 6, 2011 Comments (0)

Caring for patent leather shoes can be quite the challenge. Sometimes, I wonder if everyone has a special pair of patents lurking in the back of their closets, just waiting to be worn. A lot of people think that patent leather is tricky to wear, and they’re 100% correct: It scuffs easily and gets dull and dirty in a heartbeat. If you follow the tips below, however, you might just end up pulling out those patent leather shoes you love and showing them off this season.

Tip #1: Avoid Using Grease or Vaseline
This type of shoe shine is recommended by so many people (perhaps even by your parents), but the problem is that Vaseline and grease attracts dust and dirt. In other words, your shoes will look great until you hit the street. By mid-afternoon you’re likely to see a collection of dirt at your feet, which is not the type of fashion statement that you want to make. Read more »

Shoe New Year’s Resolutions

January 6, 2011 Comments (0)

Pushing yourself forward in the fashion realm is a great New Year’s resolution that will force you to take pride in your appearance and take a few extra minutes to elevate your style. It doesn’t have to consume you, but changing up your shoe habits can inject new life to your wardrobe and put some pep in your step, making it a fabulous New Year.

1. Go ultra bright.

Wearing a pair of neon shoes will make you stand out in a crowd. If you’re scared of major color, go for an electric blue or vibrant purple versus a neon pink pair of pumps. Wear the shoes with subdued colors for a look that’s right on the money and mimics the neutral and brights trend we saw on the runways for the SS 11 fashion season. Even over-the-top bright shoes can go to the office when worn with a simple sweater and smart skirt. Keep your hair and makeup polished to keep the tone of the look professional versus trendy fashion victim. Read more »

Shoe Tips: Storing your summer shoes

November 9, 2010 Comments (0)

By now, summer is officially over and, depending on where you live in the country, you may even have had your first dusting of snow! With that in mind, it’s time to clear out your shoe closet and make sure that all those strappy summer sandals are carefully stored so that they’ll look good as new once summer rolls around again (7 more months!!!)

The first step (no pun intended) is to take stock of what you’ve got. Are any of your sandals looking a little worse for wear? If so, it’s time to bite the bullet and take action. If it’s a matter of replacing a broken heel tip or buffing out a few scratches, send them to the cobbler pronto for a quick touch up. If, however, they’re beyond repair, it might be time to send them to the big shoe closet in the sky and throw them out.

Party Shoe Supplies: What to Have In Your Purse or Glove Box

October 19, 2010 Comments (0)

Getting whisked off your feet takes work! You can pack your purse or your glove compartment with just a few supplies to make your time out more enjoyable. After all, have you ever tried to swing around the dance floor with a huge blister?

Round Bandages

Got a blister? A round bandage is the perfect touch when you’ve got some shoe-related friction going on, particularly in high heels. A round bandage is easy to trim with nail scissors if you must, and it is also much easier to disguise than a big, fat bandage. Round bandages can be found in clear and flesh tones. Read more »

Protecting your shoes is a dying art, we think, especially after browsing all those stylish shoe protectors from the 1940s. Instead of killing your shoes in the rain, why not use some special gadgets to protect your feet from wet ground and moisture?

Smelly Cat: Kitty Litter Shoe Deodorizer

August 16, 2010 Comments (0)

Sure, you have a closet (cupboard, suitcase, fridge) filled with shoes, but there’s always that one pair – that one glorious ballet flat that goes with everything, that never fails to be comfortable and that… well, quite frankly… is starting to smell more than a little funky.

If your shoes are stinky, here’s an at-home tip that’ll banish the pong faster than you can say “kitty litter.”

Yes, that’s right. Kitty litter. You see, it turns out the stuff your feline friend relies on to keep her bathroom endlessly fresh can actually work wonders to eliminate odor AND banish dampness (for those times you were caught in a rainstorm or just for those super-sweaty days!) from your shoes.
