Caring for Patent Leather Shoes

April 6, 2011 Comments (0)

Caring for patent leather shoes can be quite the challenge. Sometimes, I wonder if everyone has a special pair of patents lurking in the back of their closets, just waiting to be worn. A lot of people think that patent leather is tricky to wear, and they’re 100% correct: It scuffs easily and gets dull and dirty in a heartbeat. If you follow the tips below, however, you might just end up pulling out those patent leather shoes you love and showing them off this season.

Tip #1: Avoid Using Grease or Vaseline
This type of shoe shine is recommended by so many people (perhaps even by your parents), but the problem is that Vaseline and grease attracts dust and dirt. In other words, your shoes will look great until you hit the street. By mid-afternoon you’re likely to see a collection of dirt at your feet, which is not the type of fashion statement that you want to make. Read more »

Shoe New Year’s Resolutions

January 6, 2011 Comments (0)

Pushing yourself forward in the fashion realm is a great New Year’s resolution that will force you to take pride in your appearance and take a few extra minutes to elevate your style. It doesn’t have to consume you, but changing up your shoe habits can inject new life to your wardrobe and put some pep in your step, making it a fabulous New Year.

1. Go ultra bright.

Wearing a pair of neon shoes will make you stand out in a crowd. If you’re scared of major color, go for an electric blue or vibrant purple versus a neon pink pair of pumps. Wear the shoes with subdued colors for a look that’s right on the money and mimics the neutral and brights trend we saw on the runways for the SS 11 fashion season. Even over-the-top bright shoes can go to the office when worn with a simple sweater and smart skirt. Keep your hair and makeup polished to keep the tone of the look professional versus trendy fashion victim. Read more »

Shoe Emergencies

January 5, 2011 Comments (0)

Winter shoe emergencies have to be the worst kind, because they aren’t just uncomfortable, they are dangerous. Summertime might mean blisters, but wintertime could mean frostbite if you’re not careful. Our top shoe emergencies solved!

Your winter shoes are slipping.

Got the wintertime slippin’ shoe blues? Yuck, that’s terrible. What Dancers Learn About Footwear

November 16, 2010 Comments (0)

Truth be told, I am far from being a dancer. In fact, I was more or less shamed out of my early ballet class for chronic klutziness, but that hasn’t stopped me from hobnobbing with my dancer friends. Your tips await!

Tip 1: Comfort Counts

Dancers’ shoes serve as an essential part of their movement, skill, and even their ability. Without proper shoes, many dancers would be unable to function onstage! Comfortable shoes don’t mean slippers, but they do mean shoes that you can trust. Natural fibers and fabrics are a plus for everyday.

Shoe Tips: Storing your summer shoes

November 9, 2010 Comments (0)

By now, summer is officially over and, depending on where you live in the country, you may even have had your first dusting of snow! With that in mind, it’s time to clear out your shoe closet and make sure that all those strappy summer sandals are carefully stored so that they’ll look good as new once summer rolls around again (7 more months!!!)

The first step (no pun intended) is to take stock of what you’ve got. Are any of your sandals looking a little worse for wear? If so, it’s time to bite the bullet and take action. If it’s a matter of replacing a broken heel tip or buffing out a few scratches, send them to the cobbler pronto for a quick touch up. If, however, they’re beyond repair, it might be time to send them to the big shoe closet in the sky and throw them out.

Disposable Shoes: Great Invention or Epic Fail?

October 29, 2010 Comments (0)

We’ve all been there. Partied just a little too hard and gotten the mother of all blisters. The simple solution? Kick off those heels and call it a night. The reality? You’ve got a 16 block walk ahead of you and nary a taxi cab in site to provide your feet with the break they need. So off you trot, putting your well pedicured paws on the mean streets. And by mean, we mean covered in garbage, grit and general grossness!

Enter Dr. Scholl’s, who this summer began delivering to pharmacies, grocery stores and other convenience retailers the Fast Flat, a cute, simple fold-up ballet flat shoe available in a host of sizes and hues, all for a wallet-friendly price of right around $10. Read more »
