Print socks in fun quirky prints and more traditional versions, like fair isle, are making their way into fashion editorials and blogs this winter. And why not? Wearing a pair of fun socks is a quick way to add color and whimsy to your outfit while keeping warm. We love print socks worn with ankle boots for a fashion-forward look that keeps you toasty every time.
1. Wear print socks with ankle boots.
Why ankle boots? Because they’re usually sleek and polished, which offsets the funky socks you’re wearing them with. After all, you don’t want the look to be too kid-like, you want to keep it sophisticated, while having fun with fashion. The socks should never take over the look, but just add a playful element. Even if its not technically sandal weather, it doesn’t mean you can start slacking on your mani-pedis! The good news? The season’s nail hues are so cute, you won’t need any encouragement to head to the salon: Military Chic: While last year, we were all about nautical navy, this year’s gotta-have-it hue is definitely camouflage inspired shades of green – think everything from pale, dusty greens to richer, forest-inspired hues. Perhaps you’re holding off until Memorial Day to rock head to toe white, but if you have to start somewhere, why don’t you kick off this crisp summer trend (literally) by rocking a stark-white polish on your toes.
To get your piggies primed for this ultra-light hue, you’re going to have to do some serious grunt work! You see, white – and for that matter, other lighter-than-light hues – require an ultra-smooth, ultra-tidy jumping off point in order to look party perfect!
If you can’t get in to your favorite spa, give your tootsies a good scrub, file your nails and buff to remove any ridges or other imperfections. If you’ve got stains from months of dark polish (those dark colors do have drawbacks!) consider soaking your feet in a bowl full of warm water with a denture cleaner tablet mixed in – it will remove stains in just a few minutes and leave your feet feeling minty fresh! I know, I know, this is supposed to be a blog about shoes, but a pair of unkempt feet can seriously ruin the look of any shoe, no matter how stylish.
For Spring 2010, makeup mavens are touting…
Blue:
The navy trend that was so hot this fall has trickled into spring, this time in a lighter, brighter hue. This spring, try pretty near-pastel shades of cornflower blue and a violet-infused periwinkle. Looking for something a little bolder? Not a problem! Shades of electric blue, cobalt, and green-tinged turquoise are also sure to make a splash this summer season.
Grey:
If grey reminds you of overcast skies, perhaps it will come as a shock that grey is a hot trend for the relatively cloudless spring and summer season! From shades of purple-infused mauve to deeper slate hues, wear this nail polish color as a neutral and pair with just about any shade of shoe under the sun (literally!) For the height of summer, we love the idea of rocking a near-white dove grey hue to really showcase that hard-earned (or sprayed on) tan! Read more »
Do you get a little sad when warm spring weather hits, shoe-wise? I do! I feel down when I have to leave my knee-high boots alone and start building other outfits that aren’t dependent on leg coverage. If you’re similar, then here are a few nice stocking and sock styles to try that will work for those of us who are leg-shy.
1. Anklets: These can be picked up in a lace-trimmed design, and they can be layered over lace tights that match and look great. Try some that can be worn with a denim skirt or similar ’80s look, then pair anklets with a pair of shoes like flats or kitten heels – or something bow-adorned if you prefer.
2. Nude Fishnets: Need to get the effect of a stocking without the sheen of one? A nude fishnet is the way to go, with a smaller-sized pattern that lends a continuous effect. Wear these with a casual skirt, or something super short and skimpy. Revel in the spring air without feeling like you’re overly exposed, and consider layering two pairs of fishnet tights on top of each other for a unique look. Read more »
Are you a slave to style? I love dressing up in silky mules and sophisticated heels, and sometimes I can’t get my head wrapped around what I want to wear when I’m in a rush to leave the house. As you know, shoes can make or break the outfit, so why not fast-forward things and find a pair of shoes that you can toss on with a great-looking dress of your choice… without tearing apart your closet in the process?
#1. d’Orsay Heels: These shoes are excellent for several reasons, which explains their popularity. They make your legs look skinny, and they even complement your ensemble when you’re in stockings. Look for a pair of d’Orsay heels, and pair them with pencil skirt, a high-waist dress with a square neck and a medium belt, or a lightweight silk skirt and a white button-down.
#2. Platforms with Metal Findings: Shoes with metal rings or studs are like a leather jacket for your feet: soft leather can look fantastic on your tootsies, especially when paired with tanned legs and a little bit of leg buffing as well. Tossing on a black or white dress with platforms dotted in metal findings is a great look– and you just need a bag to match. Read more »
