New York’s shows are the most trend-oriented and street-influenced of all, but luckily it’s the high style streets of the Big Apple that make the impact on the designers here, and New York women know how to create an original style and wear it like a star.
For the Fall 2010 shows, Phillip Lim proved to be the most in touch with the burning fashion desires of New York women, showing a collection with strong 70s influences of disco glamour and dramatic leisure, but gracefully done in modern fabrics- no sweaty polyester in sight, just dramatic capes, shiny blouses for the dancefloor, and loads of gorgeous creased and flared pants. Is it wrong to be dreaming about spring shoes? We don’t think so. Spring shoes get tasty with smart touches of light-n-airy embellishment, and with all the storming the States has experienced lately, we’re dreaming of something a little less weather resistant. When we can ditch the winter boots and go for the sandals, the slip-ons, and the open-toed shoes, we’re going to be smiling away happily. Because we already know what we want.
Here are a few of the embellishments that are making spring flats and sandals worthwhile, in our eyes:
1. Jeweled toes: Forget about the fancy, chunky jeweled-toed shoes we were seeing before on our favorite sandals… these spring fling sandals feature a single jewel that fits happily in between our toes, thong style. These sandals can feature anything from glittering gems to a mirrored metal ball, so you won’t run out of options any time soon.
2. Moccasin-inspired stitching: Heavy stitching in “homespun” style yarns are getting us ready to head out, all dressed up. Say goodbye to barely-there topstitching, and hello to shoes that give you passion, folklore, and traditional detailing, all in one. We recommend seamed sandals with heavy yarn stitching near the toe seam and heel cap. Read more »
A firm favorite of the lumberjack set, and ubiquitous with the Kurt Cobain era, flannel has made a serious comeback this season, even for footwear!
At its roots, flannel is all about being comfortable and cozy, so it seems only natural that the fabric would crop up on equally comfortable and cozy pair of boots. We’re seriously digging the Cody boot by Roxy, which features an Ugg-inspired suede vamp and a slouchy, plaid printed shaft complete with on-trend metallic hardware for extra street-cred!
Want to take this warm-weather staple to your cooler-than-cool office? Make it work by imposing the fabric on an otherwise classic shape – the always appropriate pump! We can just envision ourselves strutting to the copier in the adorable Betty Sue PH311 by PentHouse. Read more »
Are you a fan of dressing up and going out on the town? You might want to think hard before you dive into your closet and pull out the first pair of slim black heels. There’s nothing worse than thinking your shoes are comfortable, and then being very surprised that they’re not. Don’t let those flat black, almond-toed heels fool you: they aren’t all like walking on clouds.
The first way to ensure your comfortable night out has a lot of do with heel height. You’ll be surprised at how perfect shoes feel that are higher than you might expect for a work heel. Sometimes, heels of 1″ can feel awkward– you might want to upgrade to a 2″ to 3″ high heel. A rubber-tipped heel and a cushioned footbed add up to that comfy shoe feeling you only usually get with the practical stuff.
Pay attention to your uppers. Are they synthetic or natural? This can make a huge difference in your comfort, especially in extreme temperatures. The sweatier your feet get, the more the chance is that you’ll suffer from a blister or another type of foot irritation. Keep chafing to a minimum with leather-lined, leather upper shoes (not patent) or a fabric-upper style. You’ll find that your feet breathe easier. You’ll also want to decrease the amount of waterproofing spray that you add to fabric shoes. Read more »
It seems like everybody is a star these days, or has the experience of it, what with photographers stalking every woman with a good outfit to put on their blog. Most of the women you see appearing on these street style sites are not famous, they’re just in the right place at the right time and, crucially, wearing the right thing.
The right thing does not mean wearing a runway replica handed down from a designer- it means wearing things with your own distinctive style, with a touch that makes you stand out. Mostly, as you’ve probably noticed, that distinction is made in the accessories, especially in the shoes that women are wearing. So if you aspire to be the object of a photographer’s lens, or merely to be the object of attention, here are some footwear ideas:
*Go for the gold- or any metal for that matter. Shiny, metallic shoes, or metallic touches on black shoes, are surefire eye-catchers.
*Brave the extremes- Super high heels and platforms were invented for making people stare in wonder. The higher, and the more unusual, the better… Read more »
As the weather begins to warm up, we look forward to new ideas, longer days and most crucial, new clothes. We shed our layers of knits and finally get to embrace something we haven’t seen in a few months – fabulous shoes. While it isn’t impossible to look chic in snow or rain boots, we can all agree that it’s far easier to do with more choices of shoes. Unfortunately, damp city streets insist on keeping us in anything with a rubber treaded sole for a few months out of the year.
Now comes spring, and with it, new fashion. Whether you’re anxious to make new purchases or ready to pull out shoes you already own, you know the excitement that comes with wearing whatever shoes you want (and not having the weather be the Debbie Downer in your day). Get a lift by adding heels to your transitional wardrobe. Transition season is that time when you can start to incorporate your heels to your outfits in small doses. Can you wear them every day? Probably not. But on those mornings when you wake up, the sun is shining and the ground is good to go (meaning it’s dry), put on your heels and go!
Try heels with your casual day looks. If you are an avid lover of trousers or jeans, don’t be afraid to cover the top of the foot with regular or trouser socks in order to sport your heels. Allow a flash of contrasting color or print on the foot to enhance your heels and give them a new spin. Try a simple top, slouchy cardigan and slim pants. Make sure the pants hit at the ankles to show off your socks and shoes, or feel free to cuff them. This is a cute look that’s fashion-forward and gets those heels on the streets even when the temperature is still cool. Read more »
