Super Size Me: High, High Heels Still Going Strong

March 10, 2010 Comments (0)

Perhaps you’re not the tallest one in the bunch; perhaps you just think they make your legs look longer, leaner, better; or perhaps you simply like standing head and shoulders over the competition. Whatever your reason, you just love to rock a sky-high heel – and these days, it’s never been easier!

With the proliferation of platforms, rocking a soaring stiletto has never been easier! In some cases, designers opt to conceal the platform with a covered midsole, such as with the Rue B modified loafer by Angel. Another option? Camouflaging the heel so that it blends seamlessly with the rest of the shoe upper, as shown with the tone-on-tone April pump by Dolce Vita.

In addition to adding height, shoe designers are also using the extra real estate to showcase their style. One great example? The eye-popping cutouts in the wedge heel of the Chez Camille shoe by Angel. Other designers, meanwhile, are using the platform – literally – to showcase other artistic embellishments, such as the knack for color-blocking demonstrated with the Ultran by Steve Madden or the use of mixed materials in the Mely wedge by BCBGirls.

However you want to rock this daring look, you’ll have no choice but to walk tall and hold your head up high!

Paris Runway Watch: Gaultier Mashes Up the Globe

March 10, 2010 Comments (0)

Always a lover of the international, Jean Paul Gaultier showed one of his  best collections this time with a clearly stated theme of combining influences from all over the world, or at least from his favorite style-inspiring places in the world- Greece, Morocco, India, Russia, China, and Mexico- leading to an extravaganza of intense colors, embroidery, and wild details that would be pretty hard to pull off, to say the least, but had designers and stylists staring with their mouths agape, dreaming of new possibilities.

There’s never been a better time for Gaultier’s message that influences come from and reverberate around the world- we are an interconnected globe now and anyone, anywhere could watch a live telecast of the show and think of their own mash-ups of local and international styles.

The shoes were extreme, mixing up Chinese embroidery and cowboy boots, extreme pointed toes hovering over recessed platforms, and even curled up genie toes.  Naturally, Gaultier threw in some simply sexy, strappy platform heels for good measure (and customers), but the real message was in the fearless embracing of many styles, many places, and many pasts that was reflected in his diverse cast of models (a despicably rare happening these days).

For fall, we can look forward to traditional influences from all over the globe  being fearlessly embraced to make modern styles.  Watch out for embroidered silks especially, as China becomes a major style player getting lots of attention in Paris.

Color Trends for Spring and Summer 2010

March 9, 2010 Comments (1)

You want color? Well then this is your season to get shoe shopping! There are so many amazing colors on the market for spring and summer 2010 that a gal will have trouble stopping at one or two new shoe purchases. Shoes update your wardrobe, so keep the clothing simple and classic and push the fashion envelope when it comes to your footwear.

Turquoise

Shades of turquoise are huge for spring and summer. Selected as the hue of 2010, the color is likely to dominate throughout the year. You’ll love what this bright shade does for basic neutral shades. On the runways of Milan and Paris, one of the strongest trends was subtle colors like beige and khaki amplified with shots of bright colors. This adds oomph to the basic pieces, but also maintains a wearable look for shocking hues like turquoise. The brighter, the better; it all depends on how daring you are. Turquoise works well for statement-making platform sandals, as well as flats and gladiator-inspired sandals.

Olive

If you choose to wear your bold shades on top, go neutral with your shoes. Olive has been crowned the new neutral and looks great with many colors in your wardrobe. More interesting than the standard neutral tones, olive is versatile and warms up the skin for a nice dose of color. Olive works with every skin tone, making it an ideal pick for sandals that sit against bare skin. Olive sandals would be great for a vacation. Wear them in the day with earth tones and khaki shorts, and sport them at night with a white maxi dress or any other all-white ensemble for instant travel chic.

Champagne

For a long time, metallics have been a mainstay of the spring and summer shoe wardrobe. This season, it isn’t gold or silver that rules, it’s a softer shade of both. Champagne can work with almost anything and if you’re the gal that is so picky she likes all of her metallics to match (hey, those women do exist!), you’re in luck. When worn with silver, champagne has cooler undertones, and when worn with gold or bronze, it instantly has a warm tint.

Champagne is a smart shade to invest in when it comes to shoes because the hue instantly dresses up any outfit. If you’re running errands downtown and get a text to meet someone for drinks, champagne sandals make a simple tank top and jeans appropriate due to that little dash of glamour. Throw on some bangles and you’re set!

Horoscopes, Shoes, and You: Your March Style Profile

March 9, 2010 Comments (0)

If you’re having a fun March so far, why not check if you’re wearing the right footwear to complement the moon and stars? It might sound silly, but if you love checking your horoscope, it’s a perfect way to maximize your good luck this month.

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Aries, you are very busy right now. To help complement all those things that are going on, you can select a pair of heels with a stockier shape and a sturdier heel. You need a pair of heels to match with everything– go for black satin for night, and navy blue leather for day.

Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20)

You can socialize more this month, thanks to a lot of career victories last month. When you get ready for parties and daytime socializing, keep current trends in mind, like shooties, booties, and nautical-style heels.

Mellow Yellow: Yellow is Hot Hue for Spring

March 8, 2010 Comments (0)

Perhaps you still have snow on the floor, perhaps you got none at all, but either way, nothing says “Spring” quite like the arrival of yellow shoes!

To ease into the trend, we love the idea of coupling the bold yellow hue with a softer, more subdued neutral tone, such as in the Kiara flat by Arturo Chiang.  Another option? Showcasing the trend in a barely there sandal, such as the Devora-J by Pierre Dumas. Read more »

The Strap-Happy Wedge – How to Wear It

March 8, 2010 Comments (0)

It seems shoe trends are all over the place for spring and summer. If you want something traditional and discreet, there’s plenty of whiskey sandals, and if you’re longing for something that ups the ante, there’s opulent colors like turquoise. One of the silhouettes we’re seeing again and again at all price points are platform wedges loaded down with straps. Sure, they make a statement, but they can also be worn almost anywhere with the right styling.

For fabric go with leather or elasticized straps. In terms of color, anything goes. Go with nude or champagne if you’re going for a leggy look, and try a bright shade like hot pink if you’re likely to wear them as a statement pieces around the clock.

For Day

Because strap-happy wedges contain so much style, you want to keep the remainder of your outfit pretty simple. Going casual works best for day with fluid pieces that gently skim your figure. You don’t want your clothes to drown you, but you don’t want them to be too tight either since this can become a rather unsightly look when paired with over-the-top platform wedges. Read more »
